Aims and activities of the organisation
Since its foundation, PEN Català has been a platform which projects writers and literature from the Catalan-speaking territories onto the international stage. This has been done through its active participation in the objectives of PEN International, namely in defence of freedom of expression and the struggle to free all persecuted writers. Since 2006, PEN Català has coordinated the Writers In Refuge Programme. This programme, with its roots in the Shelter Cities programme which was promoted by the International Parliament of Writers, aims to host a writer who is threatened, persecuted or at risk of being imprisoned as a consequence of their writing. PEN Catala is also a member of the International Network of Refuge Cities ICORN. As member of the network, PEN Català hosts every year a writer who has been persecuted in their home country and offers them a safe haven in Barcelona. PEN is also concerned about new generations and has a school programe in collaboration with secondary schools to promote critical thinking and freedom of expression. PEN has also a translation program that includes a digital magazine (Visat) and an international translation award. PEN organises an international residency for emerging European writers every 2 years
