Aims and activities of the

organisation MARe Foundation operates MARe/Museum of Recent Art, from Bucharest, which opened in 2018, as the first private art museum in the last hundred years in Romania. The activity and mission of MARe revolves around exhibiting, promoting and disseminating contemporary art, from the last 60 years. Having a unique building conceived precisely for it by Lebanese architect, Youssef Thome, MARe stands as an example of fine architecture in the Northern part of Bucharest. Its collection is mainly made of significant pieces of Romanian contemporary

art, from the 1960s till present day, mapping the phenomenon of contemporary art during and after Communism. Along with that, the collection also contains 200 pieces of international contemporary art, votive for what the art movements of contemporaneity mean.

Throughout its 6 years of existence, MARe has organized

outstanding exhibitions: solo shows of international artists such as Jeff Wall, Martin Creed, Thomas Ruff and others, group shows revolving around important themes in Romanian art and society, a Picasso exhibition with a parallel between Picasso

and Romanian artists, plus significant samples displaying part of the Romanian collection. All these meant establishing and growing collaborations among MARe and cultural institutes

from Bucharest, international and local museums and galleries, international and local private collections, companies interested in investing in art, and of course very keen collaborations with the artists themselves.

Apart from a cultural lane, MARe’s mission also involves

interdisciplinarity through the events organized throughout the years regarding: music, experimental sound, contemporary dance and performance, music, conferences and art talks. Also, MARe is highly dedicated to the educational side: since it opening, MARe organized art workshops for children, held by young and specialized trainers. There have also been guided tours offered to the public, guided tours made by the

specialized and trained staff of the museum, guided tours

offered by invited curators and guided tours offered by artists

belonging to the collection.

In the past we applied for funding for several cultural projects

and we do have a great deal of experience in this area.

Our aims for the future are:

1. Develop more the museum audience in Romania

2. Develop the notion of the contemporary museum

7. Organize cultural events on a wide range of disciplines

8. Organize training workshops for museum specialists and

curators

9. Organize conferences and art talks on relevant themes for contemporary art and culture

10. Establish and grow connections with other museums
