Strand/category: Support to European Cooperation Projects 2020
Deadline: 27.11.2019 / Deadline for partner search: 4.11.2019
Cultural operator: Cultura Foundation
The Cultura Foundation is an expert organisation that aims to create conditions for the Russian-speaking community to participate in Finnish society. By means of culture, we invite the entire Russian-speaking community and Finland’s other residents to engage in an open and equal dialogue. The Foundation was established in 2013 by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland. Its cofounders are the municipalities of Helsinki, Vantaa, Turku, Tampere, Lappeenranta and Joensuu. The Foundation initiates surveys into Finland’s Russian-speaking community and carries out projects that seek to find and implement participatory models
and methodologies. In its work, the Foundation draws upon the role that culture plays in societal processes in today’s world, as well as on the importance of equal participation and diversity.

Proposed Creative Europe project
The project looks for alternatives to one-way social integration programmes, which address migrants, culture and language minorities, and other socially underrepresented groups as a target group, not as actors, makers, or experts themselves. In the future project, we would like to equip the motivated representatives of language minorities (i.e. it could be piloted with the Russian speakers) with knowledge and skills which can help them become intercultural mediators capable of developing, or taking part in the development of inclusion patterns and methods, based on culture and arts, themselves. Mediators could work together with the invited artists, who will help to address the most relevant issues for those communities, tackling them with artistic vision and reaching out larger audiences and collaborators from communities and host societies. As a result, we would like to present and share our findings, and possibly some new models/products of intercultural mediation as a means of participation and inclusion which could be applicable to different communities, to cultural institutions, NGOs, and decision-makers.
